Can MTHFR Give You Acne?

Yes, it happened to me. I was struggling with acne for years, using every product I could find that told me it would cure my acne. Instead I dried out my face and continued to get new acne. I was tested for the MTHFR gene mutation and found out I had it (we have a much more in-depth blog post explaining the MTHFR gene mutation if you want to get scientific). I never made the connection with acne until I stopped eating foods enriched with folic acid and started oil cleansing with the Klo RE3 oil cleanser for acne-prone skin. My acne vanished and my skin balanced out and healed. I realized I had been fighting this battle on my skin with toxins that were causing me to break out. When you have the MTHFR gene mutation, your body is constantly trying to detox the synthetic folic acid that is in so much of our food.

Absorbing the harsh toxins and chemicals in acne fighting creams and cleansers was just too much for my skin. Of course I was breaking out. If your liver is overloaded with inflammatory bi-products from food (synthetic folic acid) this can result in skin problems (acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea).

Meanwhile the skin care products I was using (some containing phthalates, parabens, benzoyl peroxide and petroleum) were being absorbed directly into my bloodstream, not even getting a chance to be cleaned and filtered by my overworked liver. I was inflamed. My organs were inflamed. Most acne is an inflammatory response, and in retrospect it is no surprise that mine was refusing to go away. They say things are always clearer in the rearview mirror. My skin definitely is.

Can you give me more info on this pls. My daughter very likely has mthfr mutation as I have it. She has acne and would so love to get rid of it for good. I was going to take her to a dermatologist but I went that path and just ended up on roaccutane which worked but I don’t think did my liver and gut any favours.

      Hi,
Thank you for your comment. What really worked for Megan was three things. One to completely eliminate all folic acid from her diet. Two, she started using the Klo duo for acne-prone skin and eliminated all other skin care products. Three, she started taking methylated B vitamins. Shoot us an email at [email protected] and we are happy to offer guidance on all of these! Hope that helps.
